Czech Civic Democrats want to suspend welfare for misdemeanor recidivists

8.10.2018 18:10 The opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS) submitted a bill on 1 October in the Czech lower house that would make it possible to deprive welfare recipients of their benefits, including housing benefits, for up to three months should the recipient commit a misdemeanor three times during the course of one year, whether the infraction was disturbing nighttime quiet or petty theft. The proposed measures are part of a bill establishing the rules for when entitlement to welfare benefits elapses.  full story

Czech ultraconservative alleges that members of minorities defend their rights at the expense of "heterosexual men who are white"

30.6.2018 12:16 Speaking in the lower house on 27 June, the chair of the xenophobic "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) party, Tomio Okamura, and the ultraconservative Václav Klaus, Jr (Civic Democratic Party - ODS) criticized the activity of the Czech Public Defender of Rights, Anna Šabatová. Okamura accused her of just defending the rights of minorities to the detriment of "white heterosexual men", and Klaus indirectly called her an extreme leftist.  full story

Czech Social Democrats would withdraw controversial plan to further restrict housing benefits

17.6.2018 10:13 If the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) is put in charge of the Labor and Social Affairs Ministry as part of the next Government, then it will withdraw a controversial planned bill to further restrict housing benefits. Czech MP Jan Chvojka (ČSSD) announced that plan during the 14 June debate in the lower house.  full story

10.3.2018 7:24 The chair of the "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) party, Czech MP Tomio Okamura, has survived an attempt to dismiss him from his function as vice-chair of the Chamber of Deputies as his fellow legislators decided a second time not to vote on the issue. During two separate votes the lower house failed to adopt the agenda of the extraordinary session convened for 7 March to discuss Okamura's remarks about the concentration camp at Lety.  full story
