VIDEO: Chair of Committee for the Redress of the Roma Holocaust in the Czech Republic on the archaeological findings there

On Monday, 12 November, news server Romea.cz interviewed the chair of the Committee for the Redress of the Roma Holocaust in the Czech Republic (VPORH), Čeněk Růžička, at the site of the archaeological probes into what have been assumed to be mass burial pits for the former prisoners of the WWII-era concentration camp at Lety. An international research team under the direction of Pavel Vařeka from the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň has been performing the very first non-invasive archaeological probe ever near the memorial currently at the site.

Luděk Strašák, administrator of remembrance sites for the Museum of Romani Culture, told news server Romea.cz that the implementation of these low-impact probes for the purpose of ascertaining whether mass graves actually are located near the current memorial site was planned in part at the request of the VPORH. Kateřina Kohoutová, press spokesperson for the Museum, told news server Romea.cz that information about the probe had been embargoed so that “only archaeologists” would be present during the work.
