Czech court says magazine can't use nickname for politician

Reflex.cz reports that a court has ruled that neither the hard copy version nor the website of Reflex magazine may call Czech MP Tomio Okamura, the head of the Úsvit ("Dawn of Direct Democracy") party, by the nickname "Pitomio" [a pun on the word "pitomec", which means "knucklehead"]. The magazine has apologized to Okamura online for distorting his name, but only for doing so in an article published after the verdict was handed down.

Reflex has repeatedly called Okamura "Pitomio" for more than a year in both its hard copy and online editions. The District Court for Prague 7 decided at the end of March that the magazine is not allowed to use the defamatory, distorted form of his name.

One month later, Reflex used the distorted version again. The magazine reports that Okamura’s attorney, Klára Samková, demanded an apology from the publisher.

Reflex apologized through its website on 14 May, but only mentioned the last such article from April. "We apologize to Mr Tomio Okamura for not respecting the court injunction and for calling him ‘Pitomio’ in an article published 24 April 2014 entitled ‘Jiří X. Doležal: Okamura do Tokia!’ [Jiří X. Doležal:  Okamura to Tokyo!]," Reflex.cz announced.
