Czech Government discussing creation of central misdemeanor registry

22 October 2012

Today the Czech Government will be reviewing a Czech Interior Ministry analysis of the option of creating an electronic registry of misdemeanors. The Government’s anti-corruption strategy counts on introducing such a registry and the ministry says it would be a public administration information system. The creation of the registry is supposed to result in stricter liability for misdemeanor recidivists, including possible criminal liability for recidivism with respect to certain kinds of misdemeanors.

“Data from the misdemeanor registry will be provided to administrative bodies reviewing misdemeanors, to criminal prosecution bodies, to the courts, to foreign authorities on the basis of international treaty, to other authorities as specified by law, and last by not least to the persons whose data are listed in the registry, ” the Czech Interior Ministry told the Czech Press Agency. The ministry is counting on retaining existing misdemeanor file systems and using the new registry as a central file. All file access would be linked to the central registry and administered by the Czech Interior Ministry.

The ministry said the establishment of a misdemeanor registry has been considered previously. The representatives of dozens of towns and villages who allegedly have problems with Romani people most recently came out in favor of such a registry.
