Greek Police to investigate neo-Nazi MPs over murder of singer

As part of their investigation into the murder of hip hop singer Pavlos Fisas, Greek Police are preparing to investigate members of the anti-immigrant, ultra-right Golden Dawn party, which is currently seated in parliament. Reuters reports that police have asked the state prosecutor for permission to access records of the phone calls between by two MPs from the ultra-right party and a local party leader.

The left-wing singer was murdered by a Golden Dawn disciple in the early morning hours of Wednesday. The party as a whole has distanced itself from the crime.

Fisas, who was 34, performed under the name Killah P and was famous in Greece for his anti-racist position. Late on Tuesday night he went out with a group of friends who were attacked after midnight by approximately 50 Golden Dawn supporters.

A 45-year-old right-wing radical stabbed the singer to death and later confessed to committing the crime. The Greek media have published a photograph of the attacker embracing a Golden Dawn MP.

Even though the party insists it has nothing to do with the assailant, police want to investigate at least two of its MPs. Police will verify who the parliamentarians were calling at the time Fisas was murdered.

The Greek Government has already asked for an investigation into whether the right-wing extremist party is connected to the murder. The investigation is being conducted by an anti-terrorist unit and the Minister of Public Order has tasked the relevant bodies with reviewing another 30 felonies in which Golden Dawn supporters have been involved.

The right-wing extremist Golden Dawn won 18 seats in parliament in last year’s elections and continues to gain strength as the economic crisis intensifies. According to several public opinion surveys, it could become the third-strongest party in the country in the next elections.
