20 million Roma launch an online tribute to Michael Jackson on his birthday
Today is Michael Jackson's birthday, and today the worldwide Roma community is pleased to launch an online tribute to their all time favorite entertainer, the King of Pop.
Michael Jackson is no longer with us, but he is fondly remembered by 20 million Gypsies. As a gesture of love and respect for their King of Pop, Roma around the world are invited to submit videos of their own best Michael Jackson song and dance performances.
“The Roma of the world have one opinion,” stated Vadim Kolpakov, who is currently performing in Sofia, Bulgaria, with Madonna's worldwide Sticky and Sweet tour. “Madonna is our Queen of Pop, and Michael Jackson will always be our King of Pop.”
Global pop diva, Madonna, has devoted one quarter of her performance to showcasing Romany music and entertainers. One highlight of the tour is Madonna singing the classic Gypsy song, “Le la pala Tute,” in perfect Romani language, accompanied by the popular Kolpakov Trio on Russian seven-string guitar. Madonna also pays tribute to Michael Jackson, with a medley of three Jackson songs featuring the Japanese dancer, Kento, a former Jackson protege.
The Global Roma Michael Jackson Tribute is being organized by an alliance of three global Roma media organizations. Kaskosan.com is the world's largest Roma social networking site, focusing on musical entertainment, with a membership embracing Europe, North and Latin America. Mundi Romani is a weekly TV magazine with a broadcast to 1.2 million viewers worldwide on Duna Television. The Roma Virtual Network is the world's largest Roma news agency.
The organizers posted the following statement on their tribute website: “Michael, we are 20 million Roma in the world. We all love you. This is our tribute to you. You will always live with us. Rest in peace.”
