In January the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation of the Roma, calling on the European Commission to prepare a communication on how the EU could coordinate and promote efforts for improving the situation of the Roma. The resolution also suggested that the Roma be recognized as a transnational European minority.

The European Agency for Fundamental Rights recently established that Roma continue to be the single most discriminated group in Europe and that urgent action needed to be taken.

In this context the European Parliament’s Socialist Group wants to put the fight against the exclusion and discrimination of the Roma back on the European political agenda.

The Group’s aim is a more effective European Roma policy and it will be discussed in the Conference "Towards a European Roma Strategy: From Commitment to Results", organised in the European Parliament on Thursday,6 March ,Room PHS 4B001 9-17 h .

The moderators of this conference are leading Socialist Euro MPs:Hannes Swoboda and Jan Marinus Wiersma, Group’s vice-presidents, Katalin Levai and Adrian Severin.

The aims of the conference and the Socialist Group’s initiative are defined by Katalin Levai, Spokesperson on Roma Issues for the EP Socialists in the following link.
