The Embassy of the United States of America in Athens has warned US citizens traveling to Greece that racist violence has revived there. Agence France-Presse reports that NGOs are ascribing the violence to Golden Dawn, a neo-Nazi party currently seated in the Greek Parliament.
People of African, Asian, Hispanic or Middle Eastern origin who are perceived as immigrants are now in danger in Athens. The Embassy has released its assessment for US tourists and other citizens residing in Greece.
Several immigrants in Greece have complained in recent months that they have been beaten up on the streets or even in their own homes. Immigrant entrepreneurs reportedly often face pressure to close their shops, and Greek labor unions claim Golden Dawn is pressuring local businesses to fire immigrant employees. The party won 18 seats in Parliament in elections six months ago.
